The Editing Process

I am far into the editing process and I am not only making minor editing adjustments. I have retaken all the shots I needed to accept for the lip syncs and the drum beat however I have decided to cut the section with the drum beat out as I have a large amount of footage and I feel that If I do not include the drum beat shots the narrative will be more spaced out and relaxed. These shots are not essential narrative so it is not a great loss to my film to lose these.

Next stage

I have completed allot of my filming in Findhorn but looking at my film there are a few more shots I want for my video.

I still have to film the musical instrument part of my video were shots of a drum and shots of a piano are shown.

I also have to retake a shot of her eye opening as the shot came out blurred. I will do this with an SLR camera.

I have decided to go with possible ending one as i feel this can be more effective and I can use more effects and play with editing techniques.

24. Risk Assessment

Filming can be slightly hazardous and dangerous so in order to make sure that when I film it is a safe environment for both the actors and the director have produced a risk assessment.

Dangers;

When filming on the road the camera has to be placed at the side of the road and the protagonist must walk across the road. This poses possible dangers.

When filming the paper butterfly burn there is a risk of starting a bigger fire or burning someone, but it is in a controlled environment so does not pose so large a danger.

Due to the cold and icy weather in November and December when we film there is a high risk of people falling and slipping.

Risk assessment

How severe could the harm be? A
1 - slight, little injury
2 - serious, more than 3 days off
3 - major, death or major injury
How likely is an accident? B

1 - low, unlikely
2 - medium, likely
3 - high, certain or very likely

Risk Rating (A x B)

1-2 - OK
3-4 - review
6-9 - stop

22. Casting

My video has two main characters and one brief background character. When casting my characters I had to think carefully about how they looked and what would fit with the tone and theme of my video.

Chosen Cast

The Girl

Maud Start; The reason I chose Maud as the main girl as she fits the look I want for my video. She has a light hearted sort of look but can also look mysterious which is vital to the story within my video. Within the genre of freak folk the characters often look this way; not particularly outrageous, soft look. This is a reference to the folk side of the genre. Folk musicians will have people with this look in their videos. Maud has previously taken drama as well which helps for creating a convincing character. Maud is 18 years old which is a perfect age for the girl and also lives in Findhorn where i wish to shoot my film which is a bonus.

The Child

Kai Johnson; For this role I have chosen my little brother Kai. Kai is 8 years old which is a perfect age for the child as this is old enough to act without being distracted but young enough to still be seen as a child. His blond hair and blue eyes portray innocence and he has a young yet inelegant look about him. He is my little brother so this means that he is easy to get hold of which is good for simplicity's sake.

21. Locations

I have chosen to shoot my video in Findhorn Foundation as the area is very scenic and has houses fields beaches dunes and forests which allows for a wide range of places to shoot.

This is the bedroom where I film the girl waking up.
This is the road where she walks down where I will use jump cuts. The colourful architecture on this road is appropriate to the tone of my music video.
This is the little house where the two characters will swap.
This is the woods in Findhorn where I will film some of the walking shots. The woods are perfect as they are vast so there's a wide range of locations to shoot.
This is the beach and the climax of the video, which is why I chose such a scenic location for this shot. It is important that this shot is very effective.
Although in this photo there is another event happening, this is the room where I will record the shots of instruments as it currently contains a drum kit, grand piano and equipment.

16. Key elements

The Genre of Freakfolk;
  • abnormal costume which has a feature of individuality
  • not necessarily making sense; the video will have a narrative yet it is not exactly clear why these things are happening
  • interesting effects on the shots such as using negatives or colour enhancing
  • the mise en scene often plays a big part in Freakfolk videos often containing; a warm lighthearted tone often through colour enhancement in the editing process (this is the folk part) and/or a very abstract abnormal feel, could contain lots of blues, but there will be objects in places or ways they shouldn't be (the freak part). I wish to incorporate both these elements; the warm feel of folk yet also an abstract freakish random set

The Audience want;
  • A feature of individuality
  • relation between the lyrics and what is happening on screen to link the two
  • they want to be surprised, weather it is by the editing narrative or effects
  • the characters within my video must be accessible to audience; the audience must be able to relate to them in some way
This is a good example of individuality
What is expected;
  • smooth editing which looks professional, must be of a high standard
  • close ups of the main artist
  • the idea of looking and reflections is often present in music videos.
  • close relation between the video and the track

    Creative task - Stop Motion

This is a stop motion video I made with the intention to use it in my final piece. I used the lyrics "by your side" and "even when your down and out" from the song and showed them in my video. I like the video that I have made and will defiantly use it yet there are a few errors where peoples shoes can be seen in photos; to solve this I may have to cut some out. This video will be broken up alongside other clips so this is possible.

    14. Shot ideas and lyrics matching

In my film I have the idea of having four different story lines. Two of which meet at the end which is an example of crosscutting. The four story lines are; a little girl/boy picking flowers, an older girl collecting balloons from places, instruments being played mirroring the sound in the song and a stop motion section.

This is a very rough draft of my shots and my idea's so far.

    Beginning Section...

Piano Keys (piano comes in) fading in and out to the song. at different angles

getting out of bed and getting up

    Ties shoes

    Drum Beating (beat comes in)

lip sync - I'll always be by your side

    Middle section...

    girl collecting balloons

to lyrics - I'll cook your food

    Girl collecting balloons

    another girl picking flowers

to lyrics - I'd wear you black eyes

    child picking flowers

    End Section...

stop motion section - hands opening and closing with different things inside them.

along side lip syncs of buy your side

child and girl both arrive at the beach hold hands at sunset

back to bed. kisses some one on the cheek still in bed

    13. Institutions which might produce, distribute and exhibit my video.

After researching the major institutions I decided it was necessary to start researching independent institutions, particularly looking at ones which promote their videos through youtube as my audience does not get their music through methods such as TV because they commonly do not like mainstream music. Searching YouTube is a much more common way for my audience to collect music.

4AD Records is an independent record label who has a much more independent selection of artists such as The National and Tune Yards. These sort of artists are much more similar to my target audience and by having my video on the same channel as them automatically targets my audience with minimal effort.

They have a youtube channel and use youtube as a source of exhibition. This is more the direction I would go in with my video. If my video was on this youtube channel it would be aiming directly at my target audience. The people who go onto this channel to look at bands they like may come across my video which is a similar genre so it is likely that they would like it.
